Registering with the Spanish Tax Agency

When and how to formally register your tax situation with the Agencia Tributaria (Modelo 030).

Last reviewed: 2026-06-15Online submission is generally processed quickly; in-person registration is often completed the same day, subject to appointment availability.

This guide is not yet verified by Tuchati's editorial review — treat it as a helpful starting point, not a final legal answer.

Overview

Having a NIE doesn't automatically tell the Agencia Tributaria what your tax situation is — whether you're working, self-employed, or simply resident. Formally registering (via Modelo 030) tells the tax authority your circumstances and address, and is a prerequisite for several other procedures, including registering as a freelancer.

Requirements

  • You need an NIE before registering with the Tax Agency
  • You'll need a fiscal address (domicilio fiscal) in Spain to register against

Step-by-step process

  • Complete Modelo 030, declaring your personal details, fiscal address and situation
  • Submit it online (with a digital certificate or Cl@ve) or in person at an Agencia Tributaria office
  • Keep your submitted copy or confirmation as proof of registration
  • If your address or circumstances change later, update your registration using the same form

Required documents

  • NIE
  • Proof of your fiscal address
  • Completed Modelo 030

Common mistakes

  • Not registering before starting self-employment, when Modelo 037/036 (freelancer registration) actually requires this groundwork to already be in place
  • Forgetting to update your fiscal address after moving, leading to official correspondence going to an old address

Practical tips

  • If you're planning to register as a freelancer (autónomo) or open certain types of bank accounts, check whether Modelo 030 registration is a prerequisite before you start that process
  • A digital certificate or Cl@ve makes this, and most future tax procedures, much faster to complete online
