Overview
Working legally as a freelancer in Spain requires registering as autónomo — both with the Agencia Tributaria (tax authority) and Social Security. This applies whether your clients are Spanish or abroad.
Requirements
- Your visa/residency status must permit self-employment (not all categories do)
- An NIE and, in most cases, a Spanish bank account for social security direct debits
Step-by-step process
- Register your economic activity with the Agencia Tributaria (modelo 036/037)
- Register for self-employed Social Security contributions (RETA)
- Set up invoicing that meets Spanish requirements (sequential numbering, correct VAT treatment)
- File quarterly tax declarations and pay your monthly social security contribution
Required documents
- NIE
- Completed tax registration form (036/037)
- Spanish bank account for social security direct debit
Common mistakes
- Not budgeting for the monthly social security contribution, which is due regardless of income in the early months
- Missing quarterly tax filing deadlines
Practical tips
- New autónomos may qualify for a reduced initial social security rate (tarifa plana) — check current eligibility before registering
- A gestor (a licensed administrative/tax professional) is commonly used to handle quarterly filings — it's a normal, affordable service in Spain, not a luxury
