How to obtain a Digital Certificate

The FNMT digital certificate lets you sign documents and complete official procedures online — here's how to get one.

Last reviewed: 2026-06-15The request and download steps take minutes; you'll typically need to allow about an hour between your in-person accreditation and downloading the certificate.

This guide is not yet verified by Tuchati's editorial review — treat it as a helpful starting point, not a final legal answer.

Overview

A digital certificate (certificado digital) is a file installed in your browser that proves your identity online, letting you complete tax filings, Social Security procedures and other official business from home instead of an in-person appointment. The most common, free option is issued by the FNMT (Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre).

Requirements

  • A valid NIE or DNI
  • Access to the specific computer and browser you'll use to complete the process, since the certificate is generated and downloaded on that same device

Step-by-step process

  • Request the certificate on the FNMT website using your NIE and an email address — you'll receive a request code
  • Book (where required) or attend an accreditation appointment at an authorised registration office (often a Tax Agency or Social Security office) with your ID and request code
  • Once accredited, return to the FNMT website on the same computer and browser used to make the request, and download and install the certificate
  • Back up your certificate file somewhere secure, since it can also be exported and used on other trusted devices

Required documents

  • NIE or DNI
  • The request code generated on the FNMT website

Common mistakes

  • Requesting the certificate on one computer or browser, then trying to download it from a different one — it won't work, since the process is tied to that specific browser
  • Not backing up the certificate file, then losing access to it if the original computer is reformatted or replaced

Practical tips

  • If you'll mainly do quick, occasional procedures rather than heavy tax filings, Cl@ve PIN (see 'How to use Cl@ve') may be simpler than installing a certificate
  • The FNMT certificate is valid for four years and is free to obtain
