Most temporary Spanish residence permits need renewing periodically, and the renewal window is strict — filing too early or too late can both cause problems. This guide covers the general renewal process that applies to most residency categories.

Step-by-step process

  • Check your TIE's exact expiry date well in advance
  • Submit your renewal application in the correct window — generally starting 60 days before expiry, with a grace period allowing submission up to 90 days after expiry, though filing after expiry can carry a financial penalty
  • Gather category-specific proof that you still meet the requirements — proof of income/employment, updated empadronamiento, current health insurance, and a clean criminal record, depending on your category
  • Pay the renewal fee (Modelo 790) and submit your application
  • Once approved, apply in person for your new physical TIE card within the required window
