Identification
The TIE (Foreigner Identity Card)
The TIE is the physical card that proves your residency status in Spain — different from, and issued after, your NIE.
Last reviewed: 2026-06-15The card itself is typically ready for collection within 30-45 days of your fingerprint appointment, though this varies by province.

Overview
The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is a physical card carrying your photo, fingerprint and NIE number. Unlike the NIE itself (just a number), the TIE is required for anyone holding an actual residence authorisation — it's the card immigration and other authorities will ask to see.
Requirements
- You must already hold an approved residency authorisation (visa or permit) that requires a TIE
- You must apply within the deadline stated on your approval notice — typically within one month of entering Spain or of approval
Step-by-step process
- Book a cita previa for TIE issuance (huella/fingerprint appointment) at your local Oficina de Extranjería or police station
- Pay the TIE fee (Modelo 790, código 012)
- Attend your appointment to have your photo and fingerprints taken
- Collect your card once ready, either in person or via the tracking reference given at your appointment
Required documents
- Passport
- Your residency approval notice (visa or resolución)
- Paid Modelo 790 fee receipt
- Passport-style photo (requirements vary by office)
Common mistakes
- Missing the application deadline stated on the approval notice, which can jeopardise the residency approval itself
- Not checking card-ready status before travelling to collect it in person
Practical tips
- Set a calendar reminder the day your approval notice arrives — TIE deadlines are strict
- Keep the receipt from your fingerprint appointment; you'll often need its reference number to track or collect the card
