Overview

A handful of mobile apps — both official government ones and everyday practical ones — cover a large share of what you'll need to manage day to day in Spain. Setting them up early saves repeated in-person trips later.

Requirements

• A smartphone and, for the official apps, your NIE and Cl@ve/digital certificate credentials

Step-by-step process

• Install the Cl@ve app, which provides mobile identity verification for most Spanish public administration online procedures
• Install the Tu Seguridad Social (Social Security) app for contribution records, certificates and appointment booking
• Install miDGT if you drive, which stores your driving licence and vehicle documents digitally and is accepted as valid ID during a traffic stop
• Install your bank's app once you've opened a Spanish account, since most everyday banking (transfers, bizum instant payments, bill management) happens through it
• Install Correos' app for parcel tracking and delivery redirection, and your city's local transport app for real-time bus/metro information

• Not setting up Cl@ve before trying to use several of these apps, since many require it for identity verification
• Relying only on generic map apps for public transport information, when regional transport apps are usually more accurate and up to date

Practical tips

• miDGT's digital driving licence and vehicle documents are legally accepted in place of the physical cards during routine checks
• Bizum, Spain's instant person-to-person payment system, is built into most Spanish banking apps and is extremely widely used for everyday small payments between individuals
