How to contact the Spanish Tax Agency

The main channels for reaching the Agencia Tributaria, and which one fits different types of query.

Last reviewed: 2026-06-15General phone queries are typically answered same-day; in-person appointments depend on local office availability, which can extend to a few weeks during peak filing season.

Overview

The Agencia Tributaria offers several ways to get help, from general phone lines to in-person appointments. Knowing which channel fits your specific query saves time compared to guessing.

Requirements

  • Relevant to anyone with a tax query in Spain, resident or non-resident

Step-by-step process

  • For general information queries, use the Agencia Tributaria's general information phone line, which can often answer common questions without an appointment
  • For queries requiring your personal tax data, use the automated phone line or online chat with Cl@ve/digital certificate verification, since general information lines can't access individual records
  • For in-person queries, book a cita previa (prior appointment) at your local Agencia Tributaria office — walk-ins are generally not accepted
  • For written queries or formal responses to a notification, use the Sede Electrónica's registered submission system, which provides a dated proof of submission

Required documents

  • NIE/NIF for any query involving your personal tax data
  • Cl@ve or digital certificate, for identity verification on personal queries

Common mistakes

  • Turning up to an office without a cita previa, when appointments are generally required for in-person procedures
  • Using the general information line for a query that actually requires access to your personal tax record, when a different verified channel is needed

Practical tips

  • Book any needed in-person appointment as early as possible, especially close to the Renta filing deadline, when demand for appointments rises sharply
  • For written communications you may need to prove you sent, always use the Sede Electrónica's registered submission rather than informal email, since it provides dated, verifiable proof
