How to register your address (empadronamiento)

Empadronamiento registers you as a resident at your local town hall — needed for healthcare, schooling and more.

Overview

Empadronamiento is the process of registering your address with your local ayuntamiento (town hall). It's separate from your immigration status — it simply tells the municipality you live there — and it's normally required regardless of your visa type or nationality.

Requirements

  • You must have an actual address in the municipality where you're registering
  • You'll need either a rental contract, property deed, or the signed authorisation of whoever already lives there

Step-by-step process

  • Book an appointment with your local ayuntamiento (many now allow online booking)
  • Complete the padrón application form, available on the town hall's website or in person
  • Attend your appointment with your documents
  • Receive your certificado de empadronamiento (sometimes issued on the spot, sometimes by post)

Required documents

  • Passport or NIE
  • Proof of address: rental contract, property deed, or a signed authorisation letter from the property's registered occupant plus their ID
  • Completed padrón application form

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a single national process exists — every ayuntamiento runs its own system and requirements vary noticeably
  • Not renewing registration where the local council requires periodic renewal (some do, for non-EU nationals in particular)

Practical tips

  • Ask your landlord in advance whether they'll provide a signed authorisation if the contract isn't in your name
  • Request several original certificates at once — you'll need to submit them to different bodies

How Tuchati can help
