How prescriptions work in Spain

Overview

Spain's prescription system is largely electronic (receta electrónica) — in most regions, once a doctor prescribes something, it's linked directly to your health card, and you simply present the card at any pharmacy rather than carrying a paper prescription.

• Applies to prescriptions issued within the public system linked to your TSI, and to private prescriptions issued by a private doctor

Step-by-step process

• Your doctor issues the prescription during or after your consultation, which is automatically linked to your health card in most regions
• Present your health card at any pharmacy in Spain to collect the medication — the pharmacist looks up your active prescriptions electronically
• For medications requiring ongoing use, your doctor can set up a repeat prescription cycle (see 'Getting repeat prescriptions')
• For private prescriptions, present the paper or digital prescription your private doctor issues, since these aren't always linked to the public electronic system
