Vehicle emissions and environmental requirements

Overview

Every vehicle registered in Spain is assigned an environmental classification sticker based on its emissions — this determines access to Low Emission Zones in major cities and, in some cases, eligibility for reduced parking or other incentives.

Requirements

• Applies to all registered vehicles, with the classification determined automatically by the DGT based on fuel type, engine and registration date

Step-by-step process

• Check your vehicle's classification via the DGT's online tool using your plate number — no application is needed, since it's assigned automatically
• The four categories are: CERO (zero-emission — electric and plug-in hybrids), ECO (hybrids and gas-powered vehicles), C (newer petrol and diesel vehicles meeting specific emissions standards), and B (older vehicles meeting a lower standard) — vehicles below the B threshold receive no sticker at all
• Purchase and display the physical sticker (distintivo ambiental) if you'll be driving in a city with a Low Emission Zone, since it's officially required to be visible even though your classification is on record digitally
• Check specific city Low Emission Zone rules before driving there, since restrictions (which categories are allowed, and when) vary by city

Required documents

• Vehicle's permiso de circulación, to confirm registration date and specifications if there's ever a dispute about classification

Common mistakes

• Assuming your vehicle automatically has no restrictions because it's relatively modern — the exact classification depends on fuel type and emissions standard, not just age
• Not displaying the physical sticker even though your car is properly classified, which can still result in a fine in some cities' enforcement systems

• The sticker itself costs around €5 and is available at Correos (the Spanish post office), authorised workshops, and gestorías
• If you're planning to buy a vehicle and regularly drive into a major city centre, check its environmental classification before buying, not after
