Failing an ITV inspection isn't the end of the process — most faults are fixable, and Spain's system gives you a defined window to fix issues and return for a free re-test.

Requirements

• Applies to any vehicle that receives a 'desfavorable' (unfavourable/fail) or 'negativo' (serious fail) result at inspection

Step-by-step process

• Review the specific faults listed on your inspection report
• Have the faults repaired — for an 'unfavourable' result, you're generally given a window (commonly one month) to fix the issue and return for a free re-inspection
• For a 'negativo' (more serious) result, the vehicle generally cannot be legally driven at all except directly to a repair location or back to the ITV station, until the fault is fixed
• Return to the same ITV station for the re-test within the given window — this is usually free if done within the deadline
• Receive your updated ITV certificate once the vehicle passes

• Continuing to drive normally after a 'negativo' result, when the vehicle's use is meant to be restricted until the fault is fixed
