Changing vehicle ownership

How to formally transfer a vehicle from one owner to another with the DGT.

Last reviewed: 2026-06-15The initial sale notification should be submitted promptly; full ownership registration is generally required within 10 working days of the sale.

Overview

Whenever a vehicle changes hands in Spain — sold, gifted, or inherited — the change of ownership (cambio de titularidad) needs to be formally registered with the DGT, distinct from simply handing over the keys.

Requirements

  • Both the seller/previous owner and buyer/new owner generally need to be involved in the notification process
  • The vehicle must have a valid, current ITV where one is due, and no unresolved issues blocking transfer

Step-by-step process

  • Complete the sale (or gift/inheritance) and agree the transfer with a written record
  • Submit the notificación de venta to the DGT — either online (with a digital certificate or Cl@ve) or in person
  • The new owner then formally registers the change of titularidad, generally within 10 working days of the sale
  • Pay any applicable transfer tax (ITP, for most private used-car sales) as the new owner
  • Receive updated registration documents (permiso de circulación) showing the new owner

Required documents

  • Sale contract or proof of transfer (gift or inheritance documentation, where relevant)
  • Vehicle's permiso de circulación and ficha técnica
  • Current ITV certificate
  • ID for both parties

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a verbal agreement and handover of keys is sufficient — the formal DGT notification is what actually protects both parties
  • Missing the 10-working-day window for the new owner to complete registration, which can result in a fine

Practical tips

  • For a private sale, both the immediate sale notification and the full ownership transfer matter — don't assume one covers the other
  • If buying or selling through a dealer, confirm explicitly who is responsible for filing each part of the paperwork
