Overview

Joint accounts (cuentas conjuntas) are common in Spain for couples and families managing shared expenses. Both holders typically have equal, independent access, which is worth understanding clearly before opening one.

Requirements

  • All account holders generally need to meet the same identification and residency documentation requirements as an individual account

Step-by-step process

  • Decide whether you want a genuinely joint account (cuenta conjunta o solidaria, where either holder can act independently) or one requiring both signatures for transactions (cuenta mancomunada, less common for everyday use)
  • Apply together, or have the primary applicant add the second holder afterwards, depending on your bank's process
  • Provide each holder's identification and required documents
  • Agree between yourselves, outside the bank's process, how you'll manage the account day to day, since the bank itself won't set usage rules beyond the account type chosen

Required documents

  • ID for each account holder
  • Proof of address for each holder, depending on the bank's requirement

Common mistakes

  • Not understanding that in a standard solidaria joint account, either holder can withdraw or spend the full balance independently, without needing the other's approval
  • Assuming a joint account splits liability evenly for any overdraft or debt — in most cases, each holder is typically liable for the full amount, not just half

Practical tips

  • If you specifically want to require both signatures for any transaction, ask your bank about a mancomunada account type, though this is less commonly offered for everyday personal banking than the standard solidaria joint account
  • Discuss and agree spending expectations with your co-holder directly, since the bank's systems won't enforce any informal arrangement between you
